Kunio Hessel is a Doctoral Student in the School and Clinical Child Psychology program at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (University of Toronto). He holds a Master of Arts (MA) in School and Clinical Child Psychology from OISE/UofT, a Master of Science (MSc) in Psychology from Western University, and a Bachelor of Cognitive Science (BCogSci) from Carleton University. Kunio’s doctoral research focuses on how the development of non-academic school skills such as perseverance, goal setting, self-advocacy, and self-regulation can help the academic achievement of students with learning differences.

Kunio is completing his doctoral practicum placement at Whitby Psychological and Counselling Services. He has training working with children and adolescents experiencing a variety of mental health concerns and learning challenges. He has worked in a variety of settings, including schools, a university psychology clinic, and private practice. Kunio believes in the use of evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). He uses a client-centred approach and focuses on the strengths and goals of clients to guide change.
